Who We Are
The Summit School Special Education Center is a small, therapeutic Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) approved and Cognia-accredited facility serving an average of 60 students whose educational needs are best served in a therapeutic environment. Summit students, from kindergarten through high school graduation, are placed by home school districts according to students’ individual education plans (IEPs). Children with identified learning, attentional and/or social difficulties, including children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, attend Summit from more than 20 school districts. At Summit, students benefit from an array of educational and support services, individualized according to IEPs, for a comprehensive educational experience. Students have a team of educators and therapists, coupled with parents and school districts, to optimize success.
Position Description
As the head of Summit School and a member of the Summit School, Inc. Leadership Team, the Principal oversees the daily activity and operation of the school, providing school-wide leadership. This includes but is not limited to discipling or advising students, approving curriculums, ensuring a safe learning environment for students and staff, and conducting staff evaluations. The Principal promotes the educational well-being of all students and leads staff in professional growth and organizational strategy. The Principal ensures compliance for all Illinois State Board of Education and Part 401 Rules.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and support school-wide goals, projects, and instructional limits to maintain accreditation standards for Cognia.
- Oversee day-to-day operations of Summit School. Support program of professional growth which includes in-building and personal professional development activities.
- Oversee in the monitoring and management of student behavior by keeping comprehensive records and by effectively communicating these to students, staff, and parents.
- Supervise the reporting, monitoring and accurate record-keeping of student attendance and carry out appropriate follow-up activities as needed.
- Arrange for substitutes.
- Evaluate staff members, conduct interviews, making hiring determinations, conduct orientation and oversee in-service training.
- Oversee the coordination with daily routines and special events.
- Oversee activities such as open house, parent/teacher conferences, and special projects as assigned.
- Coordinate building calendar and disseminate appropriate information about activities via bulletins, memos, etc., as assigned.
- Conduct classroom observations.
- Supervision of building Paraprofessionals.
- Coordinate, assign, and supervise personnel.
- Work with the Chief Executive Officer and school leadership in compiling the annual budget.
- Serve as liaison in school-community relations as needed and maintain active involvement with Professional organizations.
- Develop and coordinate communication of school policies.
- Maintain adequate channels of communication with parents, students, and staff by utilizing conferences, phone contacts, written communications, and attendance at various meetings.
- Serve with student, faculty, and parent groups as requested in advancing educational objectives and related activities.
- Conduct Domain Meetings, Annual Reviews, Re-Evaluations and parent conferences as needed.
- Oversee the development and preparation of student schedules and class assignments.
- Execute special projects and duties designated by the CEO.
- Coordinate and submit Illinois State Board of Education documentation (i.e. renewal, safety forms, updated policies).
- Effectively manage Summit School, Inc. policies and administrative procedures, applying policies and procedures in a fair and equitable manner.
- Other school related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Hold an active school administrator license
- Hold an active LBS 1 licensure
- At least seven years’ experience working in Special Education
Salary/Benefits
- Starting $87,000+
- Competitive Salary and Benefits, entire compensation will be based on experience.
