The Social Worker/Counselor is a 10-month, fulltime, at-will employee of Summit School with the option for an additional Extended School Year (ESY) contract.
The primary function of the Counselor is to provide individual or small group counseling for students in a K-12 private therapeutic day school setting as required by the students' individualized education plans (IEP). The Counselor participates in IEP meetings, writes reports and weekly progress notes. The Counselor also consults instructional team members regarding pro-active, educational, programming, and social-emotional supports, and collaborates with team members, related services providers, families, and other agencies as appropriate.
Qualified applicants require one of the following:
- PEL School Support Personnel Endorsement (Type 73)
- Licensed Clinical Social Worker
- Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor
Specific Job-Related Abilities:

- Evaluate, plan and implement Social Work/Counseling services according to the student's individualized education plan.
- Develop treatment plans for each therapy session and keep a therapy log to document series, student performance, and data collection.
- Participate in IEP meetings, and three-year re-evaluations, as required throughout the school year for students on assigned caseload.
- Effectively interpret and communicate assessment and evaluation results related to the social-emotional or functional domain, and clarify proposed interventions and supports required for greater independence in a manner easily understood by team members, the district, and parents.
- Submit quarterly progress reports, plus an Extend School Year (ESY) report in a timely manner for distribution to school districts, case managers and parents/guardians. This includes service logs for districts.
- In collaboration with the classroom teams and the related services team, arrange for, develop and perform activities/materials that relate to IEP goals that can be carried over into the classroom or groups throughout the school year to ensure proper generalization of skills across settings. (i.e. pragmatic groups)
- Consult with, collaborate, and interact with the school team regarding recommendations throughout the school year.
- Team in overseeing Social-Emotional Curriculum and implementation of curriculum throughout the school.
- Participate in floor and faculty meetings upon invite or necessity throughout the school year.
- Collaborate with team to ensure student transition planning.
- Coordinate, lead and organize family education opportunities to assist with student’s generalization of skills in collaboration with the school therapy and clinical coordinator.
- Participate in annual professional development and training throughout the school year.
- Establish and maintain a consistent form of communication with the teachers, related service team, case managers and parents/guardians of students on caseload as needed throughout the school year.
- Provide support, resources, and recommendations for classrooms on caseload as needed throughout the school year.
- Work with team members to model strategies, discuss student progress, and assess student needs.
- Successfully complete required training, re-training, and any additional training.
- Complete any other essential duties as assigned including evaluations of performance.
Physical Requirements:
- Requires prolong sitting or standing.
- Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull or push heavy objects or materials.
- Occasional stopping, bending, and reaching.
